Orange Peal Records, “Orange” being the label owner’s favorite fruit and “Peal” defined as ringing bells, loud noises sums up the philosophy behind the name, however the name itself only goes so far in defining the overall philosophy that this indie label stands behind. The ultimate mission behind Orange Peal Records is to show and share with others that one does not have to go by the so called “rules” in order to realize ones dreams in the music industry. When Orange Peal first opened for business in the summer of 1998, Rob Trisler’s goal was to create and sell records from music he enjoyed, have self-containing distribution, and his bands on the road. At that time Rob and his friends built the label from the bottom up merely “by the seat of their pants” promoting one band at a time under the same philosophy that runs the label today, and even though the musical tastes have changed over the years, each time a new band is signed, the same amount of enthusiasm goes behind each release. Since it’s inception, Orange Peal Records has remained resilient and stable without the assistance of a major, maintaining a steady amount of sales to keep the company on track for its short and long term goals. Although the label welcomes limited partnerships with other labels whether major or not, the philosophy has always remained constant in that it’s the music that drives the label.
Staying in touch with the fans by releasing what the fans want is a major factor in its current success. The label is always looking forward and never back, constantly looking for bigger and better ways of creating and selling albums from all avenues, including sponsorships, advertising, publicity, distribution, and touring.
Signing a band is a major process where the same philosophy comes into play. The process involves all employees at the label getting behind the music well before a decision to pursue that artist ever takes place. Over the years the label has been in more demand by artists and because of the demands created by the fans, the selection process has become more specific. Just as important to this process is that the artist needs to have the same enthusiasm the label has and be willing to devote a major amount of their time in touring and promotion in order to achieve their goals. It has always been of utmost importance to Rob that even though it this a business, the employees and the artists be treated like family and expects the same back.
Current short-term goals include increasing the gravity of national distribution the label already obtains, and the efficiency to utilize them properly, booking spring and fall tours for their artists, supporting major and major-indie artists on the road, and creating ways to incorporate endorsements and sponsorships. The current long-term goal for the label would be to eventually help a major label sell records for an Orange Peal artist.
The tastes in musical style are constantly changing, but the Orange Peal philosophy of putting music first at this label never will. |
